District details summer facility upgrades, installs 800 bus cameras and approves two CMAR contracts

The Lyon County School District provided trustees an overview of the district’s busiest summer of facilities work in recent memory and sought board approval for construction managers at risk on two school projects.

Executive Director of Operations Harmon Baines summarized summer work that included HVAC and boiler projects, eight roofing projects, carpeting in about 180 classrooms, new hallway hard‑surface flooring (HVT) to replace VCT, and epoxy work in 18 bathrooms. Baines said the facilities team and site custodial crews completed projects the district previously lacked capacity to perform in‑house, and that perimeter fencing and several repurposed modular classrooms were also part of the work completed.

Transportation upgrades included installation of 800 interior and exterior bus cameras across the fleet and upgraded radios to provide consistent communication with drivers, mechanics and administrators. Baines said the camera system gives the district full coverage and easier footage retrieval when incidents occur; he and Superintendent Logan said the system could support future enforcement of stop‑arm laws but that traffic patterns in Lyon County make stop‑arm enforcement less frequently needed than in urban districts.

The board then voted to approve two construction managers at risk (CMAR) as recommended by the selection committee: CORE Construction for the Fernley High School single‑point entry and culinary project (preconstruction services quoted at $22,500) and Miles Construction for Dayton High School single‑point entry (preconstruction services quoted at $35,290). The board approved both CMAR selections by voice vote.

Trustees praised the visual and operational improvements at multiple sites and thanked facilities and transportation staff for the scale of work completed over the summer.
