Volunteer group asks Sherman County to allow community repairs; commissioners say existing waivers cover most materials

Members of Prayer and Action told the Sherman County Board of Commissioners they plan to bring student volunteers in June to repair homes for low-income, elderly and disabled residents and asked to waive landfill fees for materials removed from those houses.

Commissioners and county staff replied that yard waste and tree limbs are accepted without charge and that metal is handled without a fee because it is weighed separately. They advised volunteers to separate materials before arriving at the county landfill and to provide addresses for the households served.

Staff clarified that certain items remain chargeable. The commissioners noted that tires and construction-and-demolition (C&D) materials may incur fees and that the county could not waive charges for tires. They directed the volunteers to coordinate timing with the landfill staff so crews can direct them on arrival.

No formal waiver was enacted during the meeting; commissioners welcomed the volunteers and said county staff would be notified in advance to assist with drop-off logistics.
