Commission steps up post‑election outreach, offers January ethics briefings for newly elected officials

The Nevada Commission on Ethics is conducting targeted post‑election outreach for newly elected officers and has scheduled online and in‑person ethics briefings to help officials meet acknowledgement and training obligations, Outreach and Education Officer Harvey reported.

Harvey said the office released a LinkedIn article on Nov. 12 providing a step‑by‑step guide for newly elected officials and planned a roughly 45‑minute online briefing on Jan. 13. The commission will also present at annual trainings hosted by the Nevada Association of Counties (NACO) and the League of Cities and is working with the Las Vegas–Clark County Library District to provide three live sessions intended to reach as many as 700 staff by mid‑January.

Harvey said the outreach listserv has grown to about 1,400 contacts compiled from county directories, the governor’s office, and past training participants. The office has begun a monthly review cycle of its training manual and is tracking increased public records requests and requests for information—43 so far this fiscal year, with 14 formal public records requests.

Why it matters: The outreach aims to reduce inadvertent violations by ensuring new and appointed officials know how to file acknowledgments and request advisory opinions before taking office. Harvey emphasized the new ability under recent regulations for advisory‑opinion requests to be filed before an official assumes office.
