Wicomico superintendent reports $20.3 million in scholarships; summer programs serve hundreds of students

During the July meeting of the Wicomico County Board of Education, Dr. Stauffer, superintendent, reported that the class of 2025 earned more than $20,300,000 in scholarships to colleges and universities nationwide, and that the five-year average is about $19,000,000 per year.

Dr. Stauffer said the figures reflect the district's annual graduates and their postsecondary awards: “Each year, we graduate close to around a thousand students. This particular year, the class of 2025 earned over $20,300,000 in scholarships to universities and colleges all across this nation.”

The superintendent also detailed summer instructional programs. Elementary summer school and programs were held at Prince Street Elementary, Fruitland Intermediate, West Salisbury and Pittsville Elementary, with 302 elementary students enrolled. The middle school summer program at Choices Academy enrolled 160 students. High school summer programming for credit recovery and original credit courses (classes such as chemistry and geometry) was held at James and Bennett, with 219 students participating.

Administrators said a full end-of-summer programming update will be provided in early fall. Board members thanked staff for operating summer programs and noted the programs help reduce summer learning loss and support students needing additional credits.

The reporting occurred in the superintendent's report portion of the meeting; no board action was required for these updates.
