Commission adopts updated county speed‑zone ordinance and revised road list

The Chatham County Board of Commissioners voted to adopt revisions to the county speed‑zone ordinance and to approve an updated list of roads where speed limits will change.

Staff presented a study of speed limits across districts; the manager said the list reduces speed limits in some locations and increases limits in others based on traffic patterns and time‑of‑day studies. The commission moved, seconded and approved the ordinance update during the meeting.

A youth commissioner attending the meeting asked what an “approved list of the roads” meant. The manager and commissioners explained that staff conducted speed studies and produced the recommended list; the manager directed that the youth commissioner could find the list in the public agenda packet and specifically referenced page 223 as the starting point to view the full list.
