The New Bedford City Committee on Appointments and Briefings voted Oct. 23 to report Mayor Mitchell’s nomination of Maria Ademes to the full City Council with a positive recommendation.
Maria Ademes, who gave her address as 356 Bridal Street, New Bedford, told the committee she has worked in real estate for about four years and is a full-time real estate agent. She said she also partners in a property-management business, which she said focuses on helping tenants find housing and works with programs including home-based Section 8. "I started my real estate career about four years ago. I'm a full time realtor, and I also have a, a property management partner with Your Land Oil LLC, who we focus a lot of on tenants, helping them find apartments," Ademes said.
Committee Chair Naomi Kinney opened the item and members moved procedural actions that led to the committee hearing the application. Councilor Joseph Lopes moved to receive the communication and place it on file before the committee heard from the appointee. After Ademes spoke, Councilor April moved to report the nomination to the full council with a positive recommendation; Councilor Maria Giesta seconded the motion. The committee approved the motion by voice vote. The record includes a reference to Nov. 13 in connection with the recommendation.
Councilor Ian Abreu praised Ademes’s community investment and business activity. "I just commend you and your family for all of your investments in New Bedford and what you do from a business standpoint," Abreu said, and added his support for her nomination.
Councilor Morad asked whether Ademes planned to work with an experienced constable; Ademes said she plans to seek mentorship from an established constable and described connections through family and local court staff. "I am going to get communication with him to start the process with him possibly," she said.
The committee’s report sends the nomination to the full City Council for consideration. The committee record does not state a final vote tally or the date of any council confirmation; the committee noted Nov. 13 in relation to the recommendation but did not specify whether that is a hearing or reporting date.
The committee adjourned at 6:37 p.m.
