Westbury expands Seal of Civic Readiness; about 150 to 200 scholars now earning the recognition

District staff described growth in the Seal of Civic Readiness program at the Oct. 22 board meeting, saying more scholars are meeting the criteria that earn the diploma designation.

A district staff member leading the program said the seal recognizes students who demonstrate civic knowledge and who apply that learning to community-focused activities outside the classroom. The district reported that participation increased from roughly 150 scholars in its earlier cohort to about 200 scholars in the most recent year, an increase of roughly 40 students.

The presentation linked the seal to broader work on a "portrait of a graduate" and multiple pathways to graduation; the district said it has also increased seals such as the Seal of Biliteracy in recent years. Staff said coordinators and teachers oversee the students' civic projects and that the district is seeing participation from scholars across grades and backgrounds.

Ending: the board thanked staff for expanding opportunities that recognize civic learning and said coordinators will continue outreach and program support.
