The Maury County Board of Education voted not to approve a Tennessee Together prevention survey at its meeting after members raised concerns about the survey and the responses it generated.
Board member Ms. Stevenson said she was not opposed to surveys in principle but had reviewed materials and the Dec. 17 meeting recording and was “not comfortable approving this.” She added, “There were a lot of things that were problematic to me. There were a lot of responses that came back to us that I don't think were acceptable,” and said, “There's a right way to do it, but this isn't it.”
Mr. Carter moved to approve the survey, with a “yes” vote to authorize the Tennessee Together survey and a “no” vote to decline; Ms. Scholl seconded the motion. After limited discussion and one board member joining the meeting without full audio capability, the motion failed. The meeting record does not include a roll-call tally showing which members voted yes or no.
Board members also completed routine business earlier in the session. Mr. Moore moved to adopt the meeting agenda; Mr. McGee seconded and the motion passed. A subsequent motion to approve items on the consent agenda was made by Mr. Carter, seconded by Ms. Dawson, and also passed.
Mr. Carter said that Miss Smith, who had been in contact with staff regarding the coalition's request, had reached out to confirm she did not need to attend the meeting in person. The record does not show Miss Smith speaking during the meeting.
No statutes, ordinances or other legal authorities were cited during the discussion. The board gave no further direction to staff on revising or re-presenting the survey during this meeting.
