Council approves three highway‑safety grants totaling about $22,129 to fund DUI patrols, traffic enforcement and equipment

Commander Wilkie told the council the town was awarded three separate grants from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to increase enforcement and equip officers.

The grants are: a $3,000 DUI overtime grant (100% reimbursable for overtime to increase patrols on holiday weekends); a $4,000 STEP (Selective Traffic Enforcement Program) overtime grant to target aggressive driving, speeding and distracted driving; and a $15,129 equipment grant to purchase laptops and vehicle mounts used for electronic citation and accident reporting.

Councilor Heisler moved and the council unanimously approved all three resolutions authorizing the chief of police or his designee to execute the grant contracts and related documents. Commander Wilkie said the equipment grant will keep officers on the road by allowing forms and citations to be completed in the vehicle and electronically transmitted to the state.
