The Elwood Union Free School District Board of Education moved a package of policy updates to first reading at its Oct. 20 meeting, trustees said.
The policies read by the board clerk included nondiscrimination and equal opportunity (0100), harassment and grievance policies under Title IX (0111 series), school district records regulation (1120), Title I parent and family engagement (1900), interpreters for hearing-impaired parents (1925), Citizens Finance and Budget Committee (CFBC, 2260.1), computer use and instruction (4526), and artificial intelligence (8636), among others.
Superintendent James Steele told the meeting most of the changes are required updates. Board members highlighted two items for discussion:
- Citizens Finance and Budget Committee (CFBC): Board members described bringing back the CFBC to provide community members with an advisory window into the budget process. The committee, the presenters said, will allow residents to review budget details and offer advisory input early in the budget cycle. Trustees urged community participation once the committee's application period opens.
- Artificial-intelligence policy (8636): The technology committee reviewed the district's AI policy, developed with district stakeholders and an earlier AI committee. District leaders said the policy emphasizes ethical use, professional judgment, intellectual-property considerations, and the limitations of detection tools. Guidelines for teacher use are posted on the technology department page and instructional staff are working at department and grade levels to determine appropriate uses.
Board members noted that many of the practices in the AI policy were already in place in classrooms and now will have formal policy backing. One trustee said the policy committee plans to meet monthly to keep policies current and to route relevant policies into subject committees (for example, health policies to the health and safety committee) for additional public discussion.
The motion for first read was made (mover recorded in minutes) and the board voted 5'0for, 0 against to approve the policies for first reading. A final adoption vote will come at a later meeting after the required review period.
