Board members raise concerns about zero‑emission buses and favor reclaiming routes

Board members and candidates used the forum to flag transportation costs as a major future pressure, in particular a potential zero‑emission vehicle mandate that speakers said will raise bus purchase and operating costs, and to endorse bringing more bus routes in‑house.

Nicholas Ciappetta warned about a looming zero‑emission mandate and described the potential cost impact: “Zero emission vehicles cost a tremendous amount of money. They cost three times more than your standard yellow bus,” he said, adding that contractor costs and pass‑through charges could make contracted routes even more expensive.

Several board members spoke in favor of regaining district control of more bus routes. Ciappetta said the district has been taking back routes over time and that each route regained generates fiscal savings for the district. He urged modernization of the district’s fleet and called taking back routes “good for our students, good for our families” and fiscally beneficial.

Speakers noted that transportation policy and procurement are affected by factors outside local control, and they said the district will continue to press for fiscal planning and regional advocacy on matters such as vehicle mandates.

No new procurement or contract awards were made at the forum; speakers described ongoing strategies and concerns for future budget planning and advocacy.
