A public commenter said they joined AmeriCorps because of a longtime commitment to volunteer service and described helping high-school students with college applications during a brief public comment at a meeting.
The commenter, a public commenter, said, “I like community service a lot, kind of my biggest passion, so it's kind of why I joined AmeriCorps.” They described AmeriCorps volunteers’ work in schools and added that volunteers “help in schools, but they also do community service on the weekends.”
The commenter said much of their work focuses on assisting high-school seniors and juniors with college planning, noting, “I help a lot of seniors and juniors with their college applications. They wanna know about universities, colleges, what career plans they have. We help them research.”
They framed their volunteerism as a values-based choice: “I always do these things because it's the right thing to do,” and urged civility and mutual respect when people disagree, saying it is possible to “accept each other, still respect each other, and still collaborate with each other.”
The remarks were part of the meeting’s public-comment period and did not include a request for action or a formal agenda item.
