KANKAKEE, Ill. — The Kankakee City Building and Code Committee heard updates from Director Nelson on permitting, rental-license penalties and new code-enforcement staff.
Director Nelson said the department issued 101 permits totaling $18,459.26. When asked about enforcement for unlicensed rental property, Nelson said the department issues a citation and “the ticket is $150.”
Nelson also reported that the department has hired three new code officers — Bryson, Wendy and Ariel — and said the new hires are performing well. “We have 3 new code officers and they're doing really good,” Nelson said. Committee members asked for contact information for officers to share with aldermen and constituents.
Committee members clarified how enforcement notices are delivered. The department uses door hangers or letters for occupied properties where staff identify a problem and allows a seven-day compliance window: three days to address the issue and four days for mailing time. The chair and members confirmed the department has been using door knockers and sending letters when tall grass or other violations are observed.
Aldermen also asked for the department to provide itemized bills and records where relevant to other agenda topics. Director Nelson said she would provide the requested contact list and additional documentation after the meeting.
The committee did not take a formal vote on staffing or enforcement procedures during the meeting.
