The Newburgh City School District policy committee on May 15 discussed Policy 22-45, which outlines how the district will select its required ex officio student board member. Committee members said the policy lists five selection options and that the board must choose which one will govern selection.
Committee members debated whether the student should be selected by the board or by student government with board approval. One committee member suggested collecting letters of interest and selecting the student by majority vote of the board. Another recommended allowing student government to choose a candidate subject to board approval. "The law requires that we have 1 ex officio student board member," said Board member 1.
Committee members noted the statute creating the position takes effect July 1 and suggested adopting a policy and starting the selection process in May and June so the district can comply with the deadline. The committee agreed to forward the policy to the full board for a first reading and to continue discussion at the board level; no final selection process was adopted at the committee meeting.
