Applicant seeks roof deck variance at 13 Bedford Street; board sends proposal to Planning Board

Alex Monterey, who said he lives at 13 Bedford Street, appeared before the Chelsea Board of Appeals on May 13 seeking a special permit and variances for a roof deck that does not meet front, rear and side setback minimums. The Board of Appeals declined to decide the application that night and directed Monterey to the Planning Board on May 27; the item is scheduled to return to the Board of Appeals on June 10.

Monterey said the proposed deck will measure “15 foot 2 by 17 foot 10” and that existing footings are in place for the structure. Board members advised Monterey to confirm exact setback measurements with the Planning Department and the Planning Board prior to the next appearance.

No members of the public spoke for or against the proposal during the May 13 hearing. The board left the public comment period open and set the Planning Board hearing date as the next procedural step.
