Pelham board amends admissions policy to allow some children born Sept. 1–Dec. 31 to enter kindergarten with readiness review

The Pelham City Schools Board of Education approved an amendment to board policy 6.1 (Admissions and Attendance), specifically section 6.11 on compulsory attendance and entrance age, to align with a recent change in state law.

Under the adopted policy change, the district will allow children whose fifth birthday falls between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31 to enter kindergarten under specified local criteria. The policy outlines that eligible students must undergo a readiness assessment and have participated in a pre-K program or otherwise demonstrate the social and academic readiness necessary for kindergarten. Board members said the amendment had been discussed in prior work sessions and on the previous meeting’s agenda to give the community time to review it.

Board members moved and approved the policy amendment by voice vote. District staff said the change implements a state law provision that became final recently and that the district will make administrative adjustments to reflect the updated statutory timing. The board directed staff to use readiness assessment procedures already in place when considering these admissions requests.

The transcript notes at least one student admission under the new rule has been processed this year, and staff emphasized the policy is designed to balance statutory compliance with attention to developmental readiness.
