Commission unanimously approves rear addition and screened porch at 247 Green Street

The Augusta Historic Preservation Commission voted 7–0 to approve a certificate of appropriateness for a rear addition at 247 Green Street in the Old Town Historic District.

Staff described the proposal as a subordinate, one-story rear addition connected by a rebuilt connector. Materials listed include asphalt shingles to match the existing roof, a brick foundation with roll cap, hard-coat stucco and brick veneer siding, exposed rafters with decorative ends, painted composite columns with Tuscan trim, and a stucco outdoor fireplace; staff concluded those elements appear compatible with the existing 1917 house and Old Town design guidelines.

Ellen Pruitt of Cheatham Fletcher Scott Architects, the project designer, said the design “respected the base” of the house and that features such as rafter tails and overhangs were drawn from the original structure to ensure compatibility. Sam Willis, the homeowner, was present. Commissioners asked about materials; Pruitt confirmed the application lists hard-coat stucco, a brick base with roll lock cap, replicated exposed rafters executed in composite for durability, and asphalt shingles matching the existing roof.

Staff recommended approval subject to any conditions the commission deems appropriate; a commissioner moved and another seconded, and the commission approved 7–0. The approved application returns to staff for standard filing and any conditions set by the commission.
