Berrien County says hot‑mix asphalt production resumed; crews cleared 30+ storm‑downed trees

Berrien County Road Department Director Mark Heiliger told the Board of Commissioners on May 22 that hot‑mix asphalt production resumed May 1 and that county crews have been busy clearing storm damage.

Commissioner Ott said Heiliger reported crews removed “more than 30 trees down throughout the county” and that seal‑coat operations are being conducted. Ott also relayed Heiliger’s assessment that “everything was on track and he didn’t expect any delays,” while noting possible scheduling impacts as nearby I‑94 construction ramps up and draws on regional asphalt supplies.

Heiliger identified finished projects in multiple districts, including work on Hollywood Road and Florence Avenue near 16th Street in Buchanan and Niles. Commissioners discussed that county roadwork could face a slowdown if regional asphalt producers prioritize I‑94 construction, because those projects are expected to increase demand for hot‑mix asphalt.
