The Miami Beach City Commission on May 28 presented a proclamation honoring Lucy Lowell, a centenarian who the commission described as a Holocaust survivor and long-time resident.
During the awards and presentations ceremony the mayor and commissioners noted that a Jewish archival organization recently located a childhood religious award and a late brother’s bar mitzvah gift that were returned to Lowell, and that Lowell had chosen to speak publicly about her experiences for the first time in decades. The commission proclaimed May 28, 2025, as Lucy Lowell Day in Miami Beach.
Mayor Francis Suarez (referred to in the meeting as the mayor) and commissioners framed Lowell’s story as a living testament to the dangers of antisemitic rhetoric, referencing recent national incidents of violence as context for the recognition. Lowell spoke briefly and said she could not talk much or stand for long, and that she was grateful for the honor.
The recognition was ceremonial and did not include any formal legislative or budgetary action. The mayor and commission emphasized remembrance and civic education in remarks accompanying the proclamation.
