Miami Beach honors PTA presidents from city schools at May 28 ceremony

At its May 28 awards and presentations ceremony, the Miami Beach City Commission presented certificates of recognition to parents and PTA presidents who have supported schools in the city.

The commission named Jacqueline Powers (Lerman), Mary Kenneth (Feinberg Fisher), and Julie Basner (Miami Beach Senior High / Innovative School at Temple Beth Shalom) among those recognized. Commissioners cited recent capital funding for a tech/STEM program and a shade structure for Miami Beach Senior High’s football field as examples of PTA advocacy resulting in tangible school improvements.

Speakers praised the PTA leaders for organizing fundraisers, facilitating parental involvement, and advocating for Title I schools. One PTA representative said the role feels like a family commitment and that advocacy leaves a lasting mark on school communities.

The presentation was ceremonial; no formal votes or budget approvals were taken at the event. Commissioners encouraged continued engagement between PTAs and the city on school needs.
