The Miami Beach City Commission gave certificates on May 28 to members of the city’s Youth Commission and highlighted the group’s recent civic initiatives, including a proposal for positive-affirmation signage in public parks.
The mayor and commissioners praised youth commissioners from several schools for civic engagement and noted that the Youth Commission’s proposal for positive-affirmation signs had moved through earlier steps and would return to the full commission in June for specific design and language approval. A youth commissioner said the group had worked with the city’s capital improvements (CIP) staff and a mental-health resource organization recommended by Miami-Dade County and the state to develop the signs and requested the commission’s support for final approval.
Commissioners highlighted that members of the Youth Commission had also traveled to Tallahassee to advocate on behalf of local priorities and that the youth effort to place positive affirmations in Bayshore Park was an example of student-led civic engagement.
The Youth Commission’s certificate presentations were ceremonial. The transcript records the Youth Commission’s internal motion to forward design/language specifics to the June commission agenda; the full City Commission had previously taken an action described in the remarks as “passed already” on an earlier step of the initiative. The June agenda item will address the design and specific language for the signs.
