Regents ask academic affairs to review tenure policy ahead of possible legislation

The Board of Regents’ Academic and Student Affairs Committee asked staff to review board policy on faculty tenure and report back with any issues or suggested clarifications amid discussion that related legislation may be reintroduced.

Regent Mendoza said a recent bill prompted concern and uncertainty, and requested academic affairs examine the board’s tenure policy so the board could be prepared to “defend tenure.” The committee asked staff to identify any areas that could be improved or clarified to address concerns and to report findings to the committee.

KBOR academic affairs staff agreed to perform a policy review and return with information to help the board prepare for possible legislative activity. No formal motion or vote was recorded; the item was a direction to staff.
