Wichita council previews review of International Property Maintenance Code amendments

Wichita City Council members on May 30 were asked to review a proposed update to the International Property Maintenance Code and provide feedback before the item moves to public discussion and formal ordinance consideration.

City Manager said the council would be asked only to "receive and file" the item at the upcoming meeting as the next formal step, and staff is seeking council direction on specific changes before drafting ordinance language. The council discussion was framed as an information and feedback step rather than a final policy vote.

The discussion matters because a code update can change the city’s standards for property upkeep and enforcement procedures; council members were asked to flag specific amendments they want considered. No formal motions or votes occurred during the agenda-review session, and staff will bring a draft ordinance for later action and public comment.

If council members identify substantive edits, staff said it will incorporate that direction into the public draft and return with the ordinance package for a formal vote. The timeline and final text were not set during the preview.
