Members of the policy committee discussed AR 08/20, the district’s new memorials policy, asking how the regulation would treat existing gardens, teacher dedications and other on-campus memorials.
Several committee members asked whether established gardens (the committee cited SRS as an example) would be grandfathered. Staff responded that anything in place prior to adoption would be grandfathered in; items created before a June 2025 adoption date would not be subject to the new prohibitions.
Committee members questioned the policy’s prohibited list, which names monuments, statues, garden markers and permanent memorials containing photographs. Several said the wording risked misunderstanding: one member asked whether the mere word “gardens” would prevent well-maintained, school-sanctioned garden projects. Committee discussion emphasized two main policy goals: avoiding retraumatization and preserving the district’s ability to use property for educational and capital projects.
As a result of the discussion the committee asked staff to add clearer language tying the prohibition to conflicts with district administrative functions and to explicitly note that previously established memorials would be grandfathered. Staff said the policy will include an origin date, so the public can determine whether a memorial predates the policy.
No permanent removal of existing memorials was proposed; the committee instead directed staff to revise wording so the policy more clearly distinguishes between pre-existing installations and new requests and to explain how the district would handle memorials during capital projects and remodels.
