The St. Cloud Public School District Board of Education received first readings on June 4 for two proposed policy revisions: closing district facilities for inclement weather or emergencies (policy 699) and disposition of obsolete equipment and materials (policy 802).
Joel Heikamp presented the first reading of policy 699 and said the revisions add wording to reflect discussions operations staff have with bus contractors and to clarify the superintendent’s authority to direct staff when safety concerns require deviations from normal contractual expectations. Heikamp cited a mid‑season weather event this year in which an unexpected snowfall required staff and the superintendent to deviate from standard schedules for safety.
Amy Skelleroad presented the first reading of policy 802 and noted technical updates to align purchasing thresholds with state bidding thresholds (changing references from $100,000 to $175,000) and a change mirroring a recent sample policy to treat tablet devices (for example, iPads) as school computers eligible for specific disposal exceptions. Skelleroad said the board finance committee recommended removing a provision that would have conveyed surplus computers to families meeting the federal poverty definition because the district’s device rotation practice means it has no plan to implement that conveyance.
Both items were presented as first readings; no votes were taken and the board will consider future readings as the policy review process continues.
