A city staff member told the Covington City Council on June 3 that contracts have been signed for phase 1 of downtown drainage repairs and paving overlay and for repaving South New Hampshire Street.
"Yesterday, I signed a contract for the drainage work and paving overlay for phase 1 of downtown. This includes Gibson Street, Rutland, and, Gibson and Rutland. Possible alternative contract on Abare. We're not quite there yet. But, this is something that we has been long anticipated," a staff member reported. The same staff member said a separate contract has been signed for repaving South New Hampshire Street.
The staff member said subsurface drainage issues in the downtown area will be repaired before the overlay is installed and that construction is expected to cause traffic disruptions downtown during the work. The contracts and work are being handled by Public Works; the staff member encouraged patience during construction and noted that repaving will smooth conditions on South New Hampshire Street.
No formal council vote on the contracts was recorded in the meeting transcript; the staff member stated the contracts had been signed and presented the update to the council. The meeting did not specify contractor names, contract amounts, exact start dates or project completion dates; those details were not provided and will require follow-up with city project staff.
Council members discussed driver behavior in relation to pavement work but did not add conditions to the contracts during the meeting.
