City updates: Bryce Davis construction underway; Underwood Park bids, RCC renovations advance

Parks staff told the advisory board on June 2 that construction has started at Bryce Davis Park and a groundbreaking was held the previous Friday; the project is expected to take about 10 months. Staff described planned improvements including pavilions in the dog park, reconfiguration of large and small-dog areas, drainage work, a dog-wash station, improved trail lighting for the east–west trail connection, playground shade structures, a new pavilion near the playground, and renovation of an end-of-life deck at a pond.

Underwood Park is in early construction procurement: staff said bids for the first phase open the coming Wednesday. The first phase focuses on infrastructure—driveway, parking (approximately 80–83 spaces), restroom, utilities—and the initial recreational components: a playground, four sand volleyball courts, six pickleball courts and a basketball court. Staff said the design removes visually imposing tall fences along the street edge and retains lower practice backstops and limited low fencing along a walking trail; horseshoe pits will be relocated to improve programming.

The Recreation and Community Center (RCC) renovation is underway with summer camps ongoing during construction. Staff said the RCC project includes new hardwood floors and changes to entry steps and parking access; staff expect the RCC project to finish in late summer or early fall. Staff encouraged advisory-board members to visit project sites once work progresses and noted the projects will be included in future updates to the board.

Timelines given in the meeting: Bryce Davis construction ~10 months; Underwood Park bids opening in the week after the meeting; RCC project expected to complete late summer or early fall. Staff asked board members to consider field trips to visit these sites when feasible.
