At the June 18 meeting the board heard second readings of two proposed policy revisions: a revision to policy on district facility closings for inclement weather or emergencies, and a revision to the disposition of obsolete equipment and materials policy.
Shannon Avinson, assistant superintendent of E12 educational services, reviewed the proposed changes to the closing policy. Avinson said the recommended language adds consideration of the bus contractor’s opinion about driving conditions, driver availability and driver safety when the district evaluates whether to delay or close. The policy also removes language that required all staff and faculty to “observe the terms of their respective contracts” and instead delegates direction to the superintendent or the terms of specific contracts.
Amy Scalarud reviewed the second reading of proposed revised board policy 802 (disposition of obsolete equipment and material). Scalarud said the threshold for disposals requiring formal bidding was raised from $100,000 to $175,000. She said the draft removes an exemption that allowed selling excess computers to families (the district does not follow that practice) and expressly permits transfer of obsolete items to charitable organizations.
Both items were presented as second readings with no vote taken at this meeting; the administration indicated the policies would return for final action in future board business according to the board’s policy‑reading schedule.
Ending: The second readings clarify transportation input for closure decisions and adjust thresholds and allowable recipients for surplus equipment; final board action will follow the policy‑adoption timeline.
