At a June 26 special session, the Vancouver School District Board of Directors indicated agreement to enter contract negotiations with Ray and Associates to lead the district's superintendent search for the 2026'1927 school year.
The board said it would proceed to formal contract talks rather than hold an immediate vote on firm selection. Members emphasized that any contract should include clear expectations on responsibilities, brand alignment for public materials and flexibility on the timeline to allow meaningful community engagement.
Director Sproul summarized board concerns about public-facing materials and staff workload, saying it was "a priority for me that we put in guardrails around what is published on our behalf to ensure that any any, job descriptions or our marketing of this position is on brand." Board members asked that the selected firm work closely with district communications staff and that the board retain final sign-off on published materials.
Board members reported reference checks with other districts about the three finalist firms. One district told board members its engagement with HYA occurred during the COVID-19 period and was conducted largely virtually; those checks said HYA tended to present more local candidates in that instance. Reference checks for Ray and Associates indicated the firm brought a national candidate pool and required less hands-on support from district staff. North Shore and Highline were named by board members as districts contacted for references.
Several directors said they found both Ray and Associates and the other finalists to be capable, but that Ray's presentation and references made members comfortable moving forward. A director noted a remaining concern that Ray's proposed timeline felt "a little aggressive" and asked that the contract clarify that the calendar can be stretched if needed for community engagement.
The board chair said staff would begin contract discussions within 24 hours and return with negotiated terms for the board to consider. The board did not record a formal roll-call vote on firm selection at the meeting.
The district's next regular meeting is scheduled for July 8 and will be held in person.
