Somers Point to consider New Jersey Transit solar lights for three bus stops; maintenance after three years will fall to city

Council member Greg (Council member Greg Schneider) told the Somers Point council that New Jersey Transit offered solar-light retrofits for three bus stops — at Acme, Carriage House and near Prima Pizza — and asked whether the council wanted to accept the installation.

Greg explained the units are lighting-only systems (no charging stations) and that the program provides a maintenance/retrofit kit after three years; that kit would become the city’s responsibility. Council members noted the locations are in direct sunlight and appeared suitable for solar installations.

Council members took a straw vote in favor of pursuing the proposal as a public-safety improvement and directed Solicitor Smith to prepare a resolution for the next meeting so the city can accept the offer and clarify maintenance obligations. Solicitor Smith said he would work with Greg and the clerk to prepare the resolution.

No binding financial commitment was taken at the meeting; council asked staff to prepare contract language and a resolution for formal consideration.
