The Imperial City Council adopted a proclamation declaring July 2025 as Parks and Recreation Month and received a slideshow presentation highlighting the department's programs, summer camps and events.
The proclamation recognized parks and recreation as vital community spaces and praised the Imperial Parks and Recreation Department staff for creating inclusive programs and signature events. A staff member noted that the department had the highest summer enrollment in the college's history and emphasized a commitment to safety and year-round programming.
During the presentation staff and council discussed retention and rehiring practices for seasonal recreation leaders and lifeguards. A parks staffer explained the current approach: lifeguards are managed differently because of hour limitations, while rec leaders are kept as year-round/on-call employees so they have priority for returning shifts and special events. The staffer said human resources is coordinating to make priority rehiring the normal practice.
Council members praised the department's events, noting strong attendance for a recent movie night, and asked that gratitude be conveyed to staff. The mayor proclaimed July as Parks and Recreation Month on behalf of the council.
The item was presented for recognition and did not require a council vote beyond adoption of the proclamation.
