Coroner describes new cooler facility, automation fund use and requests small recurring budget items

The coroner briefed the finance committee on the county's mortuary operations and an automation fund used to pay for facility and equipment costs. The coroner said the county charges a $100 cremation fee that funds an automation account used for equipment and operational needs.

The coroner described how the new cooler facility has reduced reliance on outside contractors and provides local temporary storage until funeral homes can retrieve decedents. He said the automation fund paid certain start-up and rental costs for the cooler arrangement and that routine purchases, such as tires for the coroner's van and maintenance on a compressor, have been and will be funded from that account. The coroner said the fund contains sufficient money to cover foreseeable operational needs but that larger repairs or capital replacements would require committee attention.

Committee members asked whether the cooler generates ongoing utility or maintenance costs; the coroner said routine utilities are included in the warehouse account and that automation funds would cover compressor replacements and other coroner-specific equipment outlays. The committee asked for clarification on fund balances and monthly reconciled reports to track automation revenue and expenditures.
