Commission hears multiple project updates: canal nomination, museum exhibit and awards revival

Commission staff gave a series of shorter updates on diverse preservation matters. They reported progress on a multi‑community effort to document the Northampton segment of the Northampton–New Haven Canal with funding from CPA and partner communities; a consultant (SWCA) has been hired to complete remaining work and advance a National Register submission for the canal corridor in Massachusetts.

Historic Northampton announced a new exhibit opening on July 3 and ongoing investigations at the Shepherd House funded by CPA in preparation for a 2027 historical costume exhibit.

Commissioners discussed restarting the historic‑preservation awards program that had lapsed. Ideas included providing a durable placard for award recipients, creating a web page or map listing winners, and exploring funding or a standing purchase order to manage costs. Commissioners also noted signs marking existing local districts — some in poor condition — and suggested standardizing and upgrading signage as a future project that could use CPA funding.

Why it matters: these initiatives support public education, nominations to the National Register and local recognition of preservation work. Staff said consultant contracting and inventories will be required for several items and that the commission will receive more detailed proposals as projects move forward.
