Board amends student handbook language to require two parent contact attempts before loss of privileges

At the July 10 meeting the board voted to approve the 2025–26 Student Rights and Responsibilities handbook with an amendment clarifying the disciplinary progression: the board added language requiring two attempts to contact parents, by at least two different methods (for example, call and email), prior to removing student privileges.

Board Member Soule moved the amendment to make item f the new item d under section 10 and to require two contact attempts; Board Member Rust seconded. Board discussion included operational questions from Board Member Rust about language related to delegation of diabetes care to designated, trained school employees (UDCAs) and whether the in-house nursing program changes had shifted responsibilities onto administrators.

Vicky Silas, administrative director of compliance and policy, said the diabetes-delegation language was recommended by the district nursing supervisor to tighten procedures and ensure trained staff can provide timely care. Silas and staff also said a phrase referencing an annual “town meeting” was removed because schools do not typically use that term; the requirement was changed to a broader expectation for parent meetings.

The amended handbook motion carried on a recorded vote. Board members asked staff to provide follow-up information on nursing staffing and implementation details.
