Council hears progress on 190th turn-lane plans and 220 Third Street options; public forum planned if KDOT agrees

City staff updated the council on two transportation planning items on June 26: finalizing geometry for a long turn lane on 190th (190 Ninth Street) and advancing design options for 220 Third Street following stakeholder feedback.

Staff reported they have been coordinating with the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) and consultants on the 190th turn-lane design and expected KDOT’s approval of a single 700-foot southbound turn lane configuration for 190 Ninth Street. Staff said that once KDOT signs off on the roadway geometry, the city will proceed with signal design work and finalize preliminary plans.

On 220 Third Street, staff said they met with a major business owner and collected operational feedback; staff will meet with KDOT in July to present additional design options, including potential ramp integration with Webster and Hamilton, and then have engineers mock up designs based on that conversation. Staff said a public forum is tentatively planned for early August to present options to the community if KDOT and property-owner discussions allow further work.

Staff cautioned the council that plans have changed several times during design (lane counts, turn-lane lengths and staging) and that the city prefers to wait for final geometry from KDOT before circulating drawings to council and the public. No formal council action was taken; staff said they will return with finalized design materials when available.
