Van Zandt County commissioners approved a resolution authorizing the county judge to sign documents required by state authorities and the Texas Soil and Water Conservation District to allow work at Cedar Creek Dam Site 140.
Court members said the retention pond at Dam Site 140, located just north of State Highway 198 on the way to Maybank, has experienced overflow issues during heavy rain. County officials described a roughly 2-inch (transcript said “2 foot diameter” but described as a relief/overflow that does not handle sufficient water) overflow relief that they said is inadequate for the incoming flow; water can back up, block roads and flood homes above mapped flood lines, the court was told. The county asked state partners to evaluate and perform work to alleviate flooding at the site.
Why it matters: Commissioners said the overflow problem has caused road blockages and flooding into homes in the area that exceed mapped flood zone lines; the resolution authorizes the judge to sign documents the state requires to permit remedial work without adding county expense for the construction.
Details: The court did not have the state paperwork in hand at the meeting but moved to grant the judge authority to execute documents when they become available. The judge framed the action as formal authorization for the Texas Soil and Water Conservation District or other state entities to proceed with work on the retention structure to increase overflow capacity.
What’s next: County staff will execute required documents when provided by the state and the Texas Soil and Water Conservation District. The resolution passed by voice vote.
