On June 17 the Topeka City Public Infrastructure Committee approved amendments to the 2023–2025 capital improvement budget and the 2023–2032 capital improvement program to provide additional funding for the Summerfield neighborhood pavement management rehabilitation and reconstruction work.
Staff explained that the Summerfield project has experienced additional pavement deterioration because the neighborhood has only one ingress and egress point and heavy construction truck traffic concentrated on that route worsened pavement areas that were previously in good condition. To address the additional damage and to proceed with the planned overlays, staff requested an increase in funding of about $750,000.
Staff said the additional work would be executed via change order to the existing contract; unit line‑item prices already exist and staff would increase quantities upon committee and governing‑body approval. Committee members confirmed the project is ongoing and that the change‑order approach is the intended procurement path.
Councilwoman Sylvia Ortiz moved approval; Councilwoman Michelle Hoefer seconded. The committee approved the funding increase 2‑0.
A companion resolution to approve the additional funding (referencing original resolution number 9544) was also approved by the committee. Staff did not provide a final revised total project budget in the committee discussion beyond the approximately $750,000 increase.
