Tim, Fargo Public Library director, told the board June 17 that the city and state were still finalizing revenue projections for the 2026 budget and that preliminary estimates showed "a deficit around $6,500,000" that will require cuts.
The board heard that city leaders are reviewing department requests and prioritizing spending, but Tim said he had no specifics for the library yet. "Every conversation that I've had with city administration ... the cuts will have to be significant," he said, and added the process was still unsettled: "So unfortunately it's, you know, hurry up and wait and we're still kind of waiting at this point."
The discussion was purely informational; the board took no formal action and did not vote on any budget changes. Tim described ongoing internal planning and said the library is watching city-level decisions for direction on priorities. Board members asked no follow-up questions at the meeting and no staff were directed to take immediate action.
Because the city-level figures remain preliminary, Tim did not identify specific programs, positions, or dollar amounts that might be affected at the library. The board will revisit the issue once the city and state finalize revenue estimates and present clearer guidance on allocations for 2026.
