The City Council approved a $41,365 contract to remove and close two underground fuel storage tanks at the police department's current property.
Council members heard that the police department is moving to a new precinct and that the existing site has two underground tanks of 8,000 gallons each with associated dispensing equipment. "These tanks are, however, registered with the EPD, and we need to look at what we need to do to mitigate those tanks to get them out of service," a staff member identified in the record as Phil said.
Phil told the council the work would include pumping and disposing of remaining fuel, testing surrounding soil for contamination, removing and disposing of any unsuitable soils, removing the tanks, backfilling and placing gravel. He said the tanks currently contained less than 12 inches of fuel. Phil recommended accepting a quote from Georgia Oilmen Services, Inc., of Lawrenceville, Georgia, for $41,365 to complete the closure and related testing.
A council member moved to approve the quote; the motion passed 5-0.
The transcript does not record remediation timelines beyond the recommendation to complete the work before the end of the year to avoid another annual registration with the EPD. The council did not identify additional funding sources during the recorded discussion.
