Commission approves interlocal with Clearwater to install temporary ferry dock, citing downtown activity and limited cost

The City Commission voted unanimously on July 17 to authorize an interlocal agreement with the City of Clearwater for assistance in repairing the ferry landing and for Clearwater to install a temporary floating dock at the Dunedin Marina.
City staff described the plan: Clearwater will bring a floating pier (relocated from its day docks) to a temporary position near the north seawall so the privately operated ferry can resume service between downtown Dunedin and Clearwater while permanent repairs proceed. Staff said Clearwater would supply labor and barge/pile‑driving capability; the city estimated the cost not to exceed $30,000 and said actual cost would likely be lower.
Commissioners and marina users asked about ingress/egress for other boats, seawall condition and whether slip renters would need to relocate. Staff and Clearwater representatives said the temporary footprint leaves room for other vessels during reduced marina traffic, the ferry operator does not plan to leave the vessel overnight, and the city will coordinate with slip renters — one renter told commissioners she was able to maneuver out of the proposed location.
Staff also said the city will bring a separate contract to the commission to repair the damaged seawall; staff expected that seawall contractor coordination will occur before the temporary docking begins. The commission approved the interlocal agreement unanimously.
