Sheriff Mark J. Danels and Cochise County public information officers promoted a senior health and safety expo in Whetstone and urged residents to take summer safety precautions ahead of monsoon season. The sheriff’s office said the expo at Cowboy Calvary Church behind RV City runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will include public-safety and community-resource booths.
The department described its “R U Okay” program as an automated welfare-check system that calls enrolled residents and dispatches an officer if scheduled checks are missed. The office said the service is intended for residents who have limited caregiver access and that it allows officers to confirm wellbeing if automated calls go unanswered.
Officials used the broadcast to warn about a recent rise in gift-card scams and asked the public and retail employees to watch for suspicious purchases such as large Green Dot card transactions. The sheriff’s office encouraged bystanders and clerks to politely verify the purchaser’s intent with a family member before completing high-value gift-card sales.
The office also advised pet owners to protect animals’ paws from hot pavement, recommending walking pets early or late in the day and testing surface heat with a bare hand or sock before taking animals outside. The sheriff’s office related an account of a dog that sustained paw burns and required veterinary care as an example of the risk.
On weather preparedness, the office pointed listeners to cochise.az.gov for information on sandbag distribution sites, noted that sand and bags (and sometimes shovels) are available at county locations, and warned motorists that as little as a few inches of floodwater can wash a vehicle off the road. Officials urged residents to prepare roof and yard defenses and to avoid driving through flooded washes during monsoon rains.
Officials asked residents to follow the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office social media channels and county web pages for additional details on the expo, emergency resources and the R U Okay program.
