The Hutchinson City Council on June 17 tabled consideration of a proposed $4,500 marketing investment to support the Monarchs collegiate summer baseball team.
City staff presented a comparison of similar communities and noted the Monarchs draw visitors: staff said the organization reported about 80,000 visitors over a recent multi‑year span and that the team currently pays field rental at Hobart Detter. City staff described the proposed $4,500 as comparable to other municipal sponsorships and likened it to past event support such as an annual NJCAA commitment.
Resident Darren True addressed the council during public comment: "I have no problem supporting the Monarchs, but…we were talking about cutting money for streets and other services. We talked about all the money we need to spend on the sewer treatment plant, the water treatment plant. We don't have enough money." True asked where the $4,500 would come from and urged the council to prioritize core services.
Councilmembers acknowledged the budget constraints raised by True while also noting that the Monarchs bring visitors who spend locally. One councilmember said the Monarchs are a business that brings people to Hutchinson. Council members noted recent capital investments in the sports field — paid in part by the city and partners — and that the new turf reduces rainouts, potentially boosting revenue for the team.
Several councilmembers said they wanted more time to compare field‑rental rates, concession arrangements and other sponsorships; staff noted Justin (not present) could confirm rental-rate details. After discussion, Councilmember moved to table the item for further review; the council seconded the motion and voted in favor to table. The city will revisit the request during budget discussions and may consider countywide coordination at a future city‑county meeting.
