Nipsco closes bike trail near Horseshoe sign for gas-line repairs; city approves temporary closure

Hammond City accepted correspondence that Nipsco has closed the bike trail near the Horseshoe sign at Indianapolis and Casino Center Drive to Fifth Avenue to replace a section of gas line, and the council approved the temporary closure.

City staff said the work is “from the where the entrances to Casino Center Bridal almost to Fifth Avenue” and will require tearing up the trail; the contractor will place the new gas line on the north side of the trail in the grass strip and restore the surface before June 1, the day of the Leon’s triathlon. “They’ll be reopened by the June 1, which is the Leon's triathlon day,” a staff member said during the meeting.

Council members made a motion to approve the closure and the motion passed. Staff indicated no additional city action was required beyond approving the closure and coordinating restoration with Nipsco.
