The Alton Board of Selectmen on July 22 authorized the Public Works Director to purchase two refurbished 40-yard compactor containers for municipal solid-waste operations at a total cost of $8,000.
Public Works Director Seth described maintenance and repair costs for the town's existing containers and said one recent repair quote approached the price of replacement. He told the board he inspected two refurbished Marathon 40-yard compactor containers available through Atlantic Recycling Equipment LLC and recommended the purchase as a cost-effective alternative to multiple repairs.
Seth said the pair of refurbished containers would be used for household trash and placed on the hook-lift compactor system; a lower-sided 30-yard open-top container may be acquired separately later for household-hazardous-waste events. The board moved and seconded a motion authorizing Seth to complete the purchase from Atlantic Recycling Equipment LLC. The motion passed.
Town staff said the purchase will be paid from the recycling revolving account's equipment line; staff noted the account balance in discussion as about $408,000 and said moving the purchase through the line would temporarily affect that line but that the reserve overall could cover the purchase. The board and staff agreed the transaction and any budget transfers would be processed according to usual financial controls and brought back to the board for any subsequent approvals as required.
The board asked staff to confirm delivery schedule, the vendor name and final invoice coding before payment processing.
