South Bend resident urges council action on sidewalks near Jackson Middle School

During the June 23 meeting's privilege-of-the-floor period, resident Chris Eberly urged the council to address the lack of sidewalks and pedestrian walkways near Jackson Middle School on Jackson Road and asked members to use their influence to press the school corporation and the city for improvements.

Eberly, who said his backyard abuts Jackson Road, said the posted 35 mph speed limit is not observed and that the area lacks adequate parking for school-sponsored events, creating hazardous conditions for students walking to school and families attending events. "I see the mayhem out there," he said. "It's a matter of time until there is an accident involving anyone. Hopefully, that's not a kid." He asked council members to help find responsible agencies and funding paths, and said he will also raise the issue at school board meetings if needed.

Council staff and members acknowledged the concern; the clerk noted staff had shared Eberly's comments with administration and Council member Bowden Simpson said he would follow up. The resident said he would welcome further assistance and was prepared to appear before the school board if that would help.

No formal council action was taken during the meeting; the item was raised as public comment and council members indicated willingness to explore next steps with staff and the school corporation.
