The planning commission gave staff consensus July 25 to schedule oath-of-office ceremonies for two newly appointed commissioners before the next regular meeting, and the commission continued the new-commissioner orientation to Aug. 13 so the appointees can attend.
Deputy City Clerk Araceli Sandoval told the commission that the clerk’s office can schedule oath appointments between meetings and that the commission does not need to take formal action for the clerk to administer the oaths. Commissioners asked for the names of the appointees; staff said both appointments were made at the July 16 city council meeting and identified the appointees as Jacob Brown and Devory Montano.
Why it matters: Swearing-in affects quorum and the commission’s ability to conduct business; commissioners noted that having new members sworn before Aug. 13 would help ensure a quorum for that meeting.
Disposition: The commission provided consensus support for staff to schedule the oaths and moved, by formal motion, to continue the orientation item to a future meeting (Aug. 13). No judicial or quasi-judicial matters were decided as part of this administrative action.
