Jim Wells County declares computers and furniture surplus, authorizes auction; staff to sanitize equipment and secure titles

The Jim Wells County Commissioners Court on July 25 voted to declare certain county‑owned equipment and furniture surplus and authorized selling the items at auction under the county’s surplus procedures.

Robert Silva, the county’s IT administrator, told commissioners the items planned for sale include computer monitors, other computer equipment and old furniture. Silva said the county will remove hard drives and memory from computers before sale and will provide a list of items to the auditor. “Most computers the hard drive and memory are being removed prior to the sale,” Silva said.

Commissioners and staff also discussed county vehicles and paperwork. Officials emphasized removing county logos and license plates and completing title paperwork before giving possession to buyers to avoid toll charges or other liability. The county auditor and staff described procedures for documenting sales and titles; one commissioner recounted a prior incident that led to charges after possession was transferred before paperwork was completed.

The court approved the surplus declaration and auction by voice vote. Staff said they will record items, ensure data removal for electronics, remove county markings from vehicles and ensure titles are transferred before transfer of possession.

No sale prices were set during the meeting; the court authorized use of the auction process and directed departments to coordinate with the auditor’s office on lists and paperwork.
