Human-rights grant recommendations tentatively scheduled for July 8 city-council meeting

Stephanie, staff to the Iowa City Human Rights Commission, told members the commission's grant recommendations were bumped from the June council packet and tentatively scheduled for the City Council meeting on Tuesday, July 8.

“We're waiting to firm that up,” Stephanie said. She advised commissioners to direct inquiries from applicant organizations to her while she awaits final confirmation from the council agenda staff.

Commissioners said the July 8 date matters for the commission's disbursement timeline and that a later council meeting in August would be “not good” for timely funding. “If we get bumped, then we're looking at August, which is not good for our timeline, right, for disbursement,” one commissioner said.

Commissioners Emily and another member asked to meet with commission staff before the council meeting; staff confirmed an opportunity to meet ahead of the July 8 possible agenda date.

No formal vote or council action occurred at the commission meeting; commissioners were instructed to coordinate applicant inquiries through staff and to await staff confirmation of the final council agenda placement.
