Residents press council on vacant properties, fireworks enforcement and buffer‑zone, immigrant concerns

During public comment several residents raised distinct but related community concerns.

Eddie (last name not recorded) urged the city to prioritize cleanup and remediation of several vacant or long‑abandoned commercial properties — including an uptown bar, the former Cindy’s restaurant and other storefronts — and suggested the city consider mechanisms to require property owners to beautify or face abatement costs. He said cleaning those lots could attract businesses and help economic development.

Fernando Morales said he bought fireworks at a stand outside the city and later received a $1,000 citation after city enforcement determined the items were illegal. Morales said he could not afford the fine, described difficulty contacting the city to resolve the citation online and asked for assistance. Mayor Ramos and staff said the city had publicized fireworks bans and fines and asked Morales to submit his citation details to the city manager’s office for staff review; the safety officer photographed the product box and staff will examine the case.

Resident John Ventura called on community groups, school board members and civic commissions to support maintaining a 1,000‑foot buffer zone for cannabis businesses and to attend a September 2 council meeting. He also urged the city to consider local responses to federal immigration enforcement and to communicate protections for undocumented residents; the mayor noted public‑comment remarks are addressed to the council as a body.

No council action was taken during public comment; councilmembers and staff responded by directing residents to staff for follow‑up and noting the September 2 meeting date for future discussion.
