Chehalis — Leaders of the Southwest Washington Fair updated the City Council on entertainment and volunteer opportunities for the upcoming fair and invited officials and residents to attend opening ceremonies on Aug. 12.
George Dodd, chairman of the fair board, invited council members to the opening and to a veterans town hall on Aug. 6 at the Veterans Museum. Fair and events manager Fiona Velasquez outlined entertainment highlights: “we have the rodeo, Wednesday and Thursday night of the fair. We have monster trucks, Saturday and Sunday of the fair. Elvis is back on Thursday evening,” and she said the Junior Livestock Auction is Friday night, with about 100 more animals entered than in past years.
Velasquez also said Country Financial is the fair’s presenting sponsor this year and that organizers are naming a few interior roads inside the fairgrounds after past honorees; she invited nominations. Ross Peterson, a fair board member, told council that last year’s attendance was about 88,370 and emphasized 4-H and FFA participation — he said 912 exhibitors presented 6,894 animals last year.
Other fair volunteers and youth representatives — including Madeline Skelley (Miss Lewis County) and Hadley Westover (Little Miss Friendly) — encouraged participation and entry. Fair organizers asked council members and residents to volunteer, attend, or donate to help local children attend when families can’t afford tickets.
The fair managers asked for volunteer help assembling picnic tables on Aug. 1 and said opening-ceremony attendees receive a free parking pass per the postcard distribution.
